Natural Light and Fresh Air Positively Affect Indoor Air Quality

DALLAS, Feb. 4-6, 2020 – As homeowners are becoming increasingly aware of indoor air pollution, VELUX encourages roofers to look to skylights such as the VELUX No Leak Solar Powered “Fresh Air Skylight to offer whole-home natural ventilation.

People are now spending 90% of their time indoors, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency1, and since homes are built tighter and more sealed, indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air2. According to the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University3, consumers are aware of the large amounts of time they spend inside and the potential health ramifications. The survey found that 42% of households ages 25–34 have healthy housing concerns, and nearly 75% of households surveyed listed indoor air quality as the factor that best describes their concern about the impact of their home on the household’s health. As these healthy home concerns continue to rise, roofers should consider the positive impact of skylights that open to natural light and fresh air ventilation.

“Homeowners are looking to trade professionals for advice on products that can improve the health of their homes,” said Brian Grohe, commercial sales manager for VELUX America. “By adding skylights that open either as replacements to existing skylights or as new cut-ins during reroofing jobs, roofers can help homeowners achieve their healthy home goals as fresh air ventilation helps rid the air of toxins from modern indoor living.”

As healthy home concerns continue to rise, so does interest in smart home automation. The VELUX ACTIVE with NETATMO automation system makes regular home airing simple. The system connects to an online weather station and monitors indoor temperature, humidity and CO2 levels, automatically opening the skylights to release polluted indoor air. The system is now compatible with Google Home, so homeowners can voice operate their skylights by simply saying “Hey Google, open my skylights,” or “Hey Google, close my skylight blinds.”

They can also set up a schedule for their skylights and blinds to open and close. A rain sensor ensures the skylights close at the first sign of rain.
VELUX ACTIVE is also compatible with Apple® HomeKit. Homeowners can use the VELUX ACTIVE smartphone app to control their skylights even if they are away from the house. For more information on VELUX ACTIVE, visit
